Mask Fit Testing
All students are required to have respiratory mask fit testing prior to attending placement in a hospital or any QLD Health facility.
All Mask Fit Testing will be conducted by qualified Registered Nurses at QUT Medical Centre Kelvin Grove, U Block, Level 2.
All appointments must be booked via PickTime - Mask Fit Testing. Bookings are essential. Bookings cannot be made over the phone. All appointments MUST be made through the above booking site.
The Mask Fit Test clinic is opened on Monday and Tuesdays (closed on public holidays). Additional days may be opened depending on demand.
Placement allocation is REQUIRED prior to booking. This means "Confirmed" status in InPlace. If unsure, please contact maskfittest@qut.edu.au or call the QUT Medical Centre on 3138 3161.
All Mask Fit testing appointments will cost $90 and must be paid for before any testing will commence.
Mask fit testing is an annually renewed requirement. Students need to be fitted for 2 masks.
Students must present their student ID, and your certificate will be emailed to your QUT email address. Please provide a copy of this certificate to inPlace and retain a copy for your records.
Facial Hair and Mask Fitting
Students with facial hair are encouraged to review the 3M website: The importance of being clean shaven while using tight-fitting respirators before their appointment to ensure a successful fit test. Unsuccessful fit tests may require you to come back on another day and another fee may be charged.
Cold and Flu
If you are unwell with cold or flu symptoms, this may affect your test. Please reschedule your appointment to a time where you are when you are feeling well. If you are unable to reschedule, please let the nurse know when you attend your appointment. You may be asked to come back another day.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q) Why is there a payment now when it used to be free?
A) As the Faculty of Health is no longer running the clinic, the QUT Medical Centre has taken over its operation. Due to this, there is now a fee involved with the running of the clinic.
Q) Can I submit the receipt to Medicare or Private Health Insurance/OHSC?
A) No, this is a private fee and is not eligible for a rebate through Medicare or Private Health Insurance. This is a test required by most QLD Health facilities and some private institutions and is therefore considered a professional charge.
Q) Can I book for another day other than Monday or Tuesday?
A) All available appointments are currently opened for Monday and Tuesday, and additional days may be opened depending on demand. If you cannot find a date that works for you, please email maskfittest@qut.edu.au and the Mask Fit Test Team will respond with alternative arrangements.
Q) I am a radiology/podiatry/optometry/psychology/ect student, do I need to do a mask fit test?
A) If you are unsure if you need a mask fit, please contact your faculty or unit coordinator directly to enquire if you need one. We recommend that you wait until you have a placement confirmed via InPlace before booking an appointment.
Q) I don’t have a placement confirmed, can I get tested early / in advance?
A) If you do not have a placement confirmed, we strongly recommend that you wait until it has been confirmed before booking an appointment. If you would like to have a mask fit test before you have a placement confirmed, please email maskfittest@qut.edu.au to enquire before booking an appointment.
Q) I have had a mask fit test last year; do I need to do another one this year?
A) Yes, mask fit testing is an annual requirement. If you had a mask fit test in November or December of 2024, please email maskfittest@qut.edu.au before booking an appointment, as those test results may still be valid.
Q) I have facial hair due to religious and/or cultural reasons, do I need to shave?
A) If you are unable to be clean shaven for your mask fit testing, please contact you unit coordinator immediately.
