Information Sheet

Patient Information Sheet

QUT Medical Centre runs an appointment system, but urgent medical problems will be dealt with as promptly as possible. Please tell our staff if you feel you need urgent assistance.

Did Not Attend (DNA) Policy

QUT Medical Centre has a strict 'Did Not Attend' (DNA) policy in place. Our clinical staff have limited appointments, and to ensure that patients are able to access appointments in a timely manner, our 'Did not attend (DNA)' policy has recently changed.

If you make an appointment and are unable to keep it, please let us know within two hours. Repeated failure to attend appointments without cancellation will mean that the Medical Centre may restrict your ability to see a doctor in a non-emergency situation.

On your first Did Not Attend, we will send you a text message informing you that you have missed your appointment and that a fee may be charged on your next non-attendance. Last minute cancellations will be considered as a Did Not Attend.

Late arrivals to booked appointments are considered as a 'Did Not Attend'. If you know you will be late to your appointment, please call reception as soon as possible. If you are late to your appointment, you may not be able to be seen, as the practitioner you have booked with has likely moved on to their next appointment. If you arrive late to your appointment with no notice and you are not able to be seen, you will be charged $40.00.

For any future appointments that you do not attend, you will be charged $40.00. This is an out-of-pocket charge and will not be covered under Medicare or Private Health Insurance. This fee MUST be paid before your next appointment.

If you think you require a longer consultation with your doctor, please let the receptionist know.

We understand that emergencies do arise, and somethings may be out of your control - if you are unable to make your appointment within the two hours' notice time, please CALL reception as soon as possible to discuss your situation and we will be more than happy to help arrange alternative arrangements.

Did Not Attend Policy - Psychology Appointments

QUT Medical Centre Psychologists have limited appointments and can have long waitlists.

QUT Medical Centre will contact patients booked in for appointments at least two days in advance. If you find you are unable to keep your appointment, we ask that you let us know as soon as possible, or within two days of your appointment.

If you cancel or reschedule your appointment on the day, this will incur a $40 Did Not Attend Fee, and may result in any future appointments being cancelled, and the psychologist not being able to see you.

Please CALL reception on 3138 3161 and speak to our receptionists if you are not able to make your appointment on the day. We understand that emergencies do arise, and somethings may be out of your control, and we will attempt to make you a new appointment or put you on a cancellation list. Not reaching out to reception may affect your future appointments.

Appointments

Sometimes our schedule may be disrupted by a medical emergency. If you have to wait to see the doctor we apologise - believe it or not, we do try to run on time!

Telephone - you can contact the nurses in the Medical Centre by phone during normal surgery hours. Emergency calls will be given immediate attention.

A Registered Nurse is in attendance during most opening hours. Best times for non-urgent visits are 8:30 to 11:00am and 1:00 to 3:00pm.

Important note to patients: Our clinicians (including GPs, Mental Health Nurses, and Psychologists, ect) cannot provide medical care if you are not physically in Australia. This includes phone calls, ZOOM calls, requesting scripts, referrals or letters. If you are not physically in Australia, we encourage you to access medical care in your local area or wait until you are back in Australia.

Important instructions for your first appointment

  • Arrive at least 15 minutes ahead of time
  • Check in at the desk in reception. You must present your Medicare or Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) Card and your student or staff ID card as well as Health Care card from Centrelink if you have one
  • Bring any medications you are currently taking
  • Bring any relevant medical records

Medical Certificates for Special Consideration

Students should see their regular doctor or the doctor that was consulted during their illness. As a general rule, it is not appropriate for a Doctor to write a Certificate for an illness that they were not consulted about at the time. Certificates are not treated as a medical emergency and will be scheduled as routine appointments (it might be 2 days until the next routine appointment). However, appointments for actual illnesses are prioritised according to severity.

Students should see information contained in Application for assignment extension, deferred examinations or special consideration page.
